The NBA world is still trying to process one of the biggest moves of the offseason, and apparently, so is Jaylen Brown.
Just one day after being traded from the Boston Celtics to the Philadelphia 76ers, Brown released an emotional statement admitting he has mixed feelings about the blockbuster deal. According to ESPN, the former Finals MVP said he is “still processing” everything and feels both excited and disappointed about the move.
For Brown, the emotions make sense.
Boston was home for a decade. He developed from a raw prospect into a five-time All-Star, helped deliver an NBA championship, won Finals MVP honors, and became one of the faces of the franchise. In his farewell message, Brown reflected on the relationships, battles, and championship memories he built with the city and its fans.
The trade itself shocked the basketball world.
The Celtics sent Brown to Philadelphia in exchange for Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks after failing to land Giannis Antetokounmpo earlier in the offseason. Many fans and analysts immediately questioned the deal, considering Brown is coming off arguably the best season of his career.
Brown averaged career highs of 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists while finishing sixth in MVP voting. He essentially carried Boston for large portions of the season while Jayson Tatum battled injuries.
What makes this move even crazier is the destination.
Not only was Brown traded, but he was traded to one of Boston’s biggest rivals. The Celtics and 76ers have one of the most historic rivalries in NBA history, making the deal even harder for many Boston fans to accept.
Now Brown joins a Philadelphia team that already features Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and rising star VJ Edgecombe. The Sixers aren’t stopping there either, as reports indicate they’re also pursuing LeBron James in free agency.
For Celtics fans, this marks the official end of the “Jays” era. For Sixers fans, it’s the arrival of a superstar entering the prime of his career.
And for Jaylen Brown?
He’s still trying to figure out exactly how to feel about it.
