The Carolina Panthers have suffered a major blow to their defense.
Pro Bowl cornerback Jaycee Horn suffered a significant quad injury during Sunday’s 21-18 loss to the Cleveland Browns, and multiple reports indicate that he tore his quad and could miss significant time.
Horn is expected to be placed on injured reserve while he seeks additional medical opinions. Reports indicate that he could miss six to 12 weeks, although the Panthers have not officially announced a specific recovery timeline.
Horn Injured Late Against Cleveland
Horn suffered the injury late in the fourth quarter during the Browns’ game-winning touchdown drive.
After Cleveland quarterback Deshaun Watson connected with tight end Harold Fannin Jr. for the go-ahead touchdown, Horn remained on the ground near the Browns’ sideline. He was eventually helped off the field and did not return.
Panthers head coach Dave Canales initially described the injury as a “significant quad injury” and said the team was seeking additional opinions.
“There’s no replacing Jaycee Horn,” Canales said Monday.
Another Major Loss for Carolina’s Secondary
Horn’s injury is especially significant because he has established himself as one of Carolina’s most important defensive players.
The two-time Pro Bowler has been one of the Panthers’ top coverage players and had remained healthy enough over the previous two seasons to play 15 games in 2024 and all 16 games last season.
Through the first three games of the 2026 season, Horn recorded six tackles and two pass breakups.
Now, Carolina will have to move forward without its top cornerback for an extended period.
Panthers Also Lost Mike Jackson
The Panthers’ secondary took another hit against Cleveland when starting cornerback Mike Jackson suffered a groin injury in the first half.
Jackson did not return, leaving Carolina to finish the game with Akayleb Evans, rookie Will Lee III and Chau Smith-Wade at cornerback.
With Horn expected to miss significant time and Jackson also dealing with an injury, the Panthers could have to rely heavily on their younger defensive backs moving forward.
A Difficult Stretch Ahead
The timing of Horn’s injury makes the situation even more challenging for Carolina.
The Panthers are scheduled to face the Detroit Lions in prime time next Sunday, putting a depleted secondary against a Detroit offense led by Jared Goff.
For now, the Panthers are waiting for additional medical opinions before determining exactly how long Horn will be sidelined.
Regardless of the final timeline, Carolina will have to adjust without one of the leaders of its defense.
Horn made it clear following the injury that he intends to work his way back.
The Panthers will now have to find a way to keep their defense moving forward while their star cornerback begins his recovery.
