Bigsby trade clears the backfield as Etienne powers Week 1 win with efficiency and explosiveness

JACKSONVILLE, Florida (AP) — Travis Etienne Jr. delivered a statement-making performance in Jacksonville’s 26–10 season-opening win over the Carolina Panthers, asserting himself as the centerpiece of an offense retooled under coordinator Liam Coen.

Etienne surged for 143 yards on just 16 carries, an efficient 8.9-yard average highlighted by a 71-yard touchdown run. But beyond the highlight reel, his advanced numbers underscored why the Jaguars believe he can anchor their attack.

According to league tracking, Etienne gained 56 yards before contact, taking advantage of improved blocking up front, and added 87 yards after contact, showing the strength to finish plays. He logged four runs of 10-plus yards, including breakaways of 30, 40 and 50 yards or more.

Efficiency fueled his day. Etienne posted 0.05 expected points added per carry, converted 18% of his rushes into first downs, and caught all three of his targets, moving the chains on one-third of them. He played the majority of snaps in the backfield, cementing his role as Jacksonville’s lead option.

The Jaguars’ offensive line set the stage. The unit allowed no sacks and produced one of the lowest pressure rates in the league, giving Etienne consistent lanes and balance to the offense.

Jacksonville reinforced that commitment a day later by trading running back Tank Bigsby to the Philadelphia Eagles. Bigsby had just five carries for 12 yards in the opener, and his departure underscored the organization’s belief that Etienne is the unquestioned feature back.

For Etienne, the timing is pivotal. Entering a contract year, he is running with urgency and purpose. His ability to combine speed, toughness and versatility is central to Coen’s scheme, which values efficiency and explosive plays.

The Jaguars walked out of Week 1 with more than a victory. They found proof that their revamped offense has balance and bite — and that Etienne is ready to carry the load.
