The Miami Dolphins may not have gotten the start they wanted in 2026, but they have already found one of the biggest bright spots of their young season.
Rookie linebacker Jacob Rodriguez has made an immediate impact in Miami, showing why the Dolphins selected him with the No. 43 overall pick in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
Rodriguez entered the NFL with plenty of expectations after an incredible college career at Texas Tech. Instead of needing months to adjust to the professional game, he has stepped onto the field and immediately looked like a player Miami can build around.
Rodriguez Has Made an Immediate Impact
Through his first three NFL games, Rodriguez recorded 28 total tackles, 11 solo tackles, one interception and one pass defended.
Those numbers are impressive for any rookie, but they become even more notable when considering the responsibility Rodriguez has already been given.
He has started all three games and has taken on an important role in the middle of Miami’s defense. The Dolphins have also trusted him to help communicate defensive assignments and get teammates lined up.
That is a lot to ask from a rookie.
Rodriguez has responded by playing fast and aggressively.
Against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3, Rodriguez recorded six tackles, three tackles for loss and intercepted Patrick Mahomes. That performance showed that he is capable of making plays against elite competition.
A Second Round Pick Already Looking Like a Steal
The Dolphins selected Rodriguez after he became one of the most productive defensive players in college football at Texas Tech.
He finished his college career with 317 tackles, 25.5 tackles for loss, six interceptions and 13 forced fumbles. During his final season, he led the nation with seven forced fumbles and finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting.
Miami saw something special in him.
The Dolphins’ front office praised Rodriguez’s instincts, competitiveness and ability to make plays all over the field when the team selected him.
So far, those traits have carried over to the NFL.
Rodriguez has shown a natural ability to find the football. Whether he is stopping a running back, covering a receiver or reacting to a quarterback, he consistently seems to be around the action.
Miami Has a New Defensive Leader
The most impressive part of Rodriguez’s start may be his maturity.
He is not playing like a rookie who is simply trying to survive his first NFL season. He is playing like someone who expects to contribute immediately.
Miami’s defense needs players who can make plays and create turnovers, and Rodriguez has already shown that he can provide both.
His interception against Mahomes was especially important because it came against one of the best quarterbacks in football. Moments like that can build confidence for a young player and show the rest of the team what he is capable of.
Even with Miami struggling as a team, Rodriguez has continued to give Dolphins fans something to be excited about.
The Future Looks Bright
The Dolphins are still searching for consistency, but Rodriguez could be one of the building blocks of their future.
At only the beginning of his NFL career, Miami’s leading tacklers and made a major play against Mahomes.
His physical style and instincts fit what Miami wants from its defense, and his experience at Texas Tech gave him plenty of preparation for being a leader.
There is still plenty Rodriguez needs to learn about playing in the NFL, but his early performances have shown that Miami may have found something special.
The Dolphins may be struggling to find wins right now, but Jacob Rodriguez is giving Miami a reason to believe the future of its defense is in good hands.
