Texas A&M might be for real.
The Aggies opened the season by absolutely destroying Missouri State 50-0, holding the Bears to just 67 total yards. Marcel Reed also looked comfortable, completing 21 of 30 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns.
Now ranked No. 10 in the country, the question becomes much bigger.
Can Texas A&M actually win a national championship?
There’s certainly enough talent.
Reed gives the Aggies an experienced quarterback who already led this program to its first College Football Playoff appearance last season. Texas A&M also has plenty of weapons around him, including Mario Craver, Isaiah Horton and Rueben Owens II.
And Mike Elko’s defense already looks terrifying.
But I’m not completely sold yet.
The offensive line lost four starters to the NFL, and Reed struggled against elite competition last season. Texas A&M averaged 38.1 points in its 11 wins but just 10 points in its two losses.
That’s the difference between being a really good team and a championship team.
The Aggies will get a much better test against Arizona State this weekend.
Right now, Texas A&M looks like a legitimate playoff contender.
Whether they’re a serious national championship contender is something they still need to prove.
