The Atlanta Braves might have a much bigger problem on their hands than another disappointing postseason exit. Franchise superstar Ronald Acuña Jr. is suddenly at the center of controversy, and the possibility of Atlanta trading its former MVP is becoming a legitimate offseason talking point.

During a recent episode of Acuña’s podcast La Bestia, former Braves catcher William Contreras and Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio joined the conversation. Things got interesting when Contreras brought up a former Braves coach and how things had changed since his departure.

Acuña responded with profanity, suggesting that the individual had acted like he was above everyone else. The comments immediately sparked speculation that he was criticizing former manager Brian Snitker.

However, Acuña later denied that he was referring to Snitker and refused to identify the individual involved. Regardless, the interview created an unnecessary distraction for an organization already dealing with postseason disappointment.

And this is where the politics of professional sports become interesting.

The Braves have built their identity around stability, clubhouse chemistry, and a strong organizational culture. When your franchise player publicly discusses past tensions within the organization, ownership and management might not appreciate the attention.

Atlanta general manager Alex Anthopoulos has already indicated that the organization will remain open-minded about potential offseason moves. That doesn’t mean Acuña is being shopped, but it certainly leaves room for speculation.

Acuña also struggled when Atlanta needed him most, recording just three hits in 24 postseason at-bats as the Braves fell to the Dodgers. His 2026 regular season wasn’t particularly dominant either, finishing with a .255 batting average, 20 home runs, and 55 RBIs.

The former MVP remains one of baseball’s most talented players, and his affordable $17 million club options for both 2027 and 2028 could make him extremely attractive on the trade market.

Interestingly, Acuña has reiterated that he wants to spend his entire career in Atlanta, while acknowledging that his future isn’t entirely in his control.

The biggest question is whether the Braves still view Acuña as untouchable.

Trading a player of his caliber would be an enormous decision, especially considering everything he has meant to the franchise. But baseball is a business, and relationships between players, coaches, executives, and ownership can influence decisions just as much as on-field production.

There is currently no confirmation that Atlanta intends to trade Acuña. Still, between the podcast controversy, disappointing playoff performance, and potential organizational changes, this could become one of the most fascinating storylines of the MLB offseason.

The Braves might have a difficult decision ahead, and losing the face of their franchise is no longer completely unimaginable.
