Jaxson Dart Injury Ends Giants Quarterback’s 2026 Season

The New York Giants have suffered a major blow to their 2026 season with quarterback Jaxson Dart set to miss the remainder of the regular season because of a serious left knee injury.

Dart suffered the injury during the opening drive of Monday night’s 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The second-year quarterback was hit by two Rams defenders while attempting a pass, causing his left knee to bend awkwardly. He was able to walk off the field under his own power but did not return to the game.

What Happened to Dart?

Dart initially underwent X-rays that came back negative. Early reports indicated that the Giants believed he had suffered an MCL sprain, giving the team some hope that the injury might not be as serious as it initially appeared.

That changed after Dart underwent an MRI.

Reports indicate the MRI revealed damage to Dart’s MCL, PCL and meniscus. There is reportedly no ACL damage, but the combination of injuries is serious enough to require surgery.

Giants head coach John Harbaugh initially said the team needed additional information before making a decision. On Wednesday, however, Harbaugh announced that Dart would miss the rest of the regular season.

Jameis Winston Takes Over

With Dart sidelined, the Giants will turn to veteran quarterback Jameis Winston.

Winston took over for Dart against Los Angeles and completed 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards and an interception. He will now become New York’s starting quarterback beginning Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.

The Giants entered the season with significant expectations surrounding Dart after his impressive rookie campaign. He opened the 2026 season with an outstanding performance against the Dallas Cowboys, completing 23 of 29 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns in New York’s 28-20 victory.

A Tough Blow for New York

Dart’s injury comes at a difficult time for the Giants. New York is 1-1 and was preparing for a stretch of games against Tennessee, Arizona, Washington and New Orleans.

Now, instead of building around their young quarterback, the Giants will have to adjust their offense around Winston while Dart begins his recovery.

The good news is that the Giants have indicated Dart is expected to make a full recovery. However, his 2026 regular season is over, leaving Winston with the responsibility of keeping New York competitive while its young quarterback works his way back from a significant knee injury.
