Pittsburgh’s Rookie Receiver Announces Himself to the NFL
Germie Bernard is officially making his presence felt in the NFL. The former Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver delivered the biggest performance of his young professional career on Sunday, helping the Pittsburgh Steelers complete a dramatic overtime comeback victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Bernard caught 11 passes for 87 yards and scored his first NFL touchdown, including the game-winning score in overtime that secured Pittsburgh’s 26-19 victory. His 11 receptions set a Steelers franchise record for catches by a rookie in a single game, surpassing JuJu Smith-Schuster’s previous mark.
For a rookie who entered the season fighting for opportunities in a crowded receiving room, the performance could represent a major turning point.
Bernard Is Earning Aaron Rodgers’ Trust
Bernard’s breakout did not happen overnight. The second-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft spent the opening weeks learning Pittsburgh’s offense and gradually earning more playing time.
The Steelers initially took a patient approach with the young receiver, giving him limited opportunities as he adjusted to the professional level. However, injuries throughout Pittsburgh’s receiving corps opened the door for Bernard to take on a larger role.
He capitalized when his number was called.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has challenged Bernard to understand defensive coverages, recognize adjustments and improve his preparation. That work is beginning to pay off, with the rookie showing the reliability needed to become a more consistent target.
Rodgers praised Bernard’s development, noting that his confidence is beginning to match his potential.
That is an encouraging sign for a Pittsburgh offense that needs dependable playmakers.
Alabama Fans Knew Bernard Had This Potential
Before arriving in Pittsburgh, Bernard established himself as one of Alabama’s most productive receivers. During his final season with the Crimson Tide in 2025, he recorded 64 receptions for 862 yards and seven touchdowns.
He finished his Alabama career with 114 catches, 1,656 receiving yards and nine touchdowns across two seasons.
Bernard’s versatility was a major reason Pittsburgh selected him with the 47th overall pick. He can line up inside or outside, contribute after the catch and help create opportunities in different areas of the field.
A Breakout That Could Change Pittsburgh’s Season
Bernard’s emergence could not have come at a better time. The Steelers improved to 4-2 after their comeback against Tampa Bay, and the rookie is giving the offense another weapon alongside established receiver DK Metcalf.
One standout performance does not guarantee future success, but Bernard has shown he can handle pressure and deliver when his team needs him most.
If he continues building chemistry with Rodgers and earning targets, the rookie could become a significant part of Pittsburgh’s offensive plans.
Germie Bernard is no longer simply a young receiver waiting for his opportunity. After setting a franchise record and scoring the winning touchdown, he has given Steelers fans plenty of reasons to believe his arrival is just the beginning.
