Second-year wideout posts career-best numbers in Week 2 loss to Colts
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (AP) — Troy Franklin made his presence felt Sunday, piling up eight receptions on nine targets for 89 yards and a touchdown in the Broncos’ 29-28 loss to the Colts.
In his second season, Franklin is quickly becoming quarterback Bo Nix’s top option. His 42-yard grab early in the game jump-started the offense, and his 3-yard touchdown catch later on highlighted the chemistry that dates back to their college days at Oregon.
Even as the Broncos came up short, Franklin’s performance stood out. He led the team in targets, receptions and receiving yards, and came through with multiple key grabs on third down that kept drives alive.
Through two games, Franklin has totaled 12 catches on 15 targets for 133 yards and one touchdown. His growing connection with Nix has given Denver’s passing game a reliable foundation. Against Indianapolis, Franklin consistently found soft spots in zone coverages, adjusted routes in tight spaces, and showed he can stretch defenses vertically when needed.
The difference between Franklin’s rookie year and now is evident. Once a player flashing potential, he now looks polished and confident. His sharper routes, improved recognition of coverages, and physicality after the catch have made him difficult to contain.
At 1-1, Denver still has plenty to prove, but Franklin’s emergence offers a bright spot. In a receiver group searching for consistency beyond Courtland Sutton, Franklin is asserting himself as the No. 1 receiver.
In Indianapolis, the scoreboard went against the Broncos, but Franklin’s breakout made one thing clear: Denver’s passing game runs through him.
