The Jon Sumrall era at Florida couldn’t have started much better.

The Gators dominated Florida Atlantic 66-21 Saturday night at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, putting together an explosive offensive performance and giving Florida fans plenty of reasons to be excited about the new era in Gainesville.

Philo Makes an Immediate Impact

One of the biggest questions entering the season was what Florida’s offense would look like under Sumrall and offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner.

The answer came quickly.

Quarterback Aaron Philo delivered an impressive debut, accounting for four touchdowns and immediately looking comfortable in Florida’s new offense.

The Gators moved the ball efficiently throughout the night and repeatedly created explosive plays against an FAU defense that struggled to keep up.

Baugh Leads the Ground Game

Florida’s rushing attack was another major reason for the dominant victory.

Jadan Baugh found the end zone three times, giving the Gators a reliable weapon on the ground and helping Florida maintain control throughout the game.

Florida’s ability to balance the passing and rushing attacks made the offense extremely difficult for FAU to slow down.

Gators Pull Away Early

Florida established control almost immediately.

The Gators scored 17 points in the first quarter and added another 21 in the second, taking a 38-14 lead into halftime. Florida continued pouring it on after the break, scoring 14 points in each of the final two quarters.

By the time the fourth quarter arrived, the game was already out of reach.

A New Era Gets a Statement Win

Florida entered the season with plenty of questions after a disappointing 4-8 campaign in 2025. Sumrall was brought to Gainesville after building successful programs at Troy and Tulane, including conference championships and a College Football Playoff appearance with Tulane.

One game doesn’t erase everything Florida has struggled with in recent years, but a 66-point performance in Sumrall’s debut is certainly a strong first step.

The Gators will now turn their attention to Campbell on September 12, looking to move to 2-0.

The Jon Sumrall era is officially underway, and after a 66-21 demolition of FAU, Florida has already given the SEC something to watch.
