Rookie Quarterback Delivers Mixed Performance

Las Vegas Raiders rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza received an extended opportunity Thursday night against the Houston Texans, playing through the first half in his second preseason appearance. The No. 1 overall pick showed some impressive flashes, but also made a costly mistake as the Raiders fell behind early.

Mendoza finished the night completing 8 of 15 passes for 86 yards and one interception.

Big Throws Highlight Mendoza’s Night

Despite the difficult start, Mendoza showed the arm talent that made him the first player selected in the 2026 NFL Draft.

One of his best throws came on an 18 yard completion to Malik Benson on third down. Mendoza also connected with Jalen Nailor on a 22-yard strike, displaying excellent velocity and accuracy on the throw.

Those plays gave Raiders fans plenty to be encouraged about, particularly as Mendoza continues to adjust to the speed and pressure of NFL defenses.

Costly Pick Six Changes the Game

Mendoza’s biggest mistake came early when he threw behind running back Mike Washington Jr. The pass was intercepted by Texans rookie linebacker Wade Woodaz, who returned it 80 yards for a touchdown.

The play gave Houston an early 17-0 advantage and put the Raiders in a difficult position.

Mendoza struggled to immediately respond, as the Raiders went three-and-out on their next possession. Houston’s defense continued to pressure the rookie, including an 11-yard sack by defensive tackle Kayden McDonald.

Plenty to Build On

While the interception will be the biggest takeaway from Mendoza’s performance, the rookie also showed why the Raiders are excited about his future.

His ability to make throws downfield and deliver accurate passes under pressure provided several positive moments. The game also gave Mendoza valuable experience against an NFL defense while working with an extended workload.

Mendoza’s first preseason appearance against Arizona was considerably cleaner, when he completed 10 of 16 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Thursday’s performance was more uneven, but preseason games are ultimately about development. Mendoza now has another game of NFL experience under his belt, along with plenty of film to study as he continues his transition to the professional level.
