The investigation reportedly focuses on how hundreds of millions of dollars flowed through the American financial system and whether any transactions may have violated U.S. law.
The AFA is led by Claudio Tapia, who has overseen one of the most successful eras in Argentine football history, including the country’s 2022 and 2026 World Cup campaigns. Reports originating from Argentine newspaper La Nación claim investigators are examining commercial agreements and financial arrangements tied to the federation’s operations in the United States.
The latest development comes after a series of legal and financial controversies involving Argentine football over the past year. In December 2025, Argentine authorities raided AFA headquarters and numerous clubs as part of a separate money-laundering and tax-evasion investigation involving financial firm Sur Finanzas.
According to reports, U.S. investigators are reviewing transactions that allegedly exceeded $300 million and are examining the role of commercial entities involved in managing international sponsorship and media-rights revenue. Witnesses have reportedly already provided testimony to federal investigators.
At this stage, no criminal charges have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing. The allegations have not affected Argentina’s participation in the World Cup, where Lionel Messi and company remain among the tournament favorites.
