The Faizon Brandon era at Tennessee could not have started much better.
No. 20 Tennessee opened the 2026 season with a dominant 56-9 victory over Furman Saturday at Neyland Stadium, jumping out to a huge early lead and never allowing the Paladins to make the game competitive.
Faizon Brandon Announces Himself
All eyes were on the five-star freshman quarterback making his first career start, and Brandon immediately showed why Tennessee handed him the job.
Brandon threw for 226 yards and three touchdowns while adding two rushing touchdowns, accounting for five total scores in his debut.
The freshman looked comfortable running Josh Heupel’s offense, making plays with both his arm and his legs and giving Tennessee fans plenty of excitement about what could be ahead.
Tennessee Takes Control Early
The Volunteers wasted little time putting the game away.
Tennessee jumped out to a 42-0 lead before Furman finally got on the scoreboard. The Vols consistently moved the football while their defense kept the Paladins from sustaining drives.
By halftime, Tennessee had already established complete control, allowing Heupel to get younger players valuable experience during the second half.
A New Era Gets Off to a Great Start
The win was important beyond the scoreboard.
Tennessee entered the season with plenty of questions surrounding the quarterback position and the defense under new coordinator Jim Knowles. Brandon’s performance immediately gave the Vols a reason to believe they may have found their next star quarterback.
The schedule gets much tougher from here.
Tennessee travels to Georgia Tech next Saturday, giving Brandon and the Vols their first opportunity to prove they can carry the momentum into a more challenging environment.
Tennessee dominated Furman from start to finish, but the biggest story was clear: Faizon Brandon has officially arrived in Knoxville.
