Bubba Wallace probably isn’t the name most NASCAR fans are thinking about when they talk about the 2026 championship.

That might be exactly why you should start paying attention.

Wallace opened the Chase at Darlington with an eighth-place finish Sunday, quietly putting together the kind of performance that could become very important as the playoffs move forward.

And here’s the crazy part.

He didn’t just survive.

Wallace showed legitimate speed.

He finished second in Stage 1 and briefly worked his way into the top three before the race settled into its long green-flag rhythm.

That’s not exactly what you’d expect from the 14th seed entering the playoffs.

But Wallace has spent much of this season proving that he can run with the best cars in the garage when everything comes together. He finished second at New Hampshire two weeks ago, narrowly missing a victory after a late brake lock-up.

Now comes the part nobody wants to hear.

What if Bubba Wallace is actually a championship threat?

The 23XI Racing driver doesn’t need to dominate every week.

He needs to survive.

He needs stage points. He needs top-10 finishes. And eventually, he probably needs to steal a win.

After Darlington, Wallace is still alive.

And considering how much attention the usual suspects are getting, that could make him one of the most dangerous drivers nobody is talking about.
