Sophie Cunningham might be the most misunderstood player in the WNBA right now.
And honestly, some of it is the league’s own fault.
Every time Cunningham’s name comes up, the conversation immediately turns into politics, controversy or whatever argument is happening on social media that week.
Meanwhile, the woman is out there shooting the hell out of the basketball.
Cunningham is hitting 43.4% of her 3-point attempts this season, which ranks second in the WNBA. Her 131.6 offensive rating is also the best mark in the league, according to ESPN Analytics.
But somehow, people would rather argue about her than talk about what she actually does on a basketball court.
That’s crazy.
She’s a legitimate floor-spacing weapon for the Indiana Fever, plays with an edge and has embraced whatever role the team needs from her. She even handled a midseason move out of the starting lineup without making it a thing.
You don’t have to agree with Sophie Cunningham.
You don’t have to like her personality.
You don’t even have to like her opinions.
But pretending she isn’t a damn good basketball player because you don’t like the discourse surrounding her is ridiculous.
Maybe we should try watching the games.
The woman can shoot.
And that tends to matter.
