The Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders will open their 2026 seasons Sunday afternoon with a huge NFC East showdown at Lincoln Financial Field.
The game is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET on FOX, with both teams entering the season believing they can compete for the division. Philadelphia won the NFC East last season at 11-6, while Washington is looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2025 campaign.
Jalen Hurts Begins Another New Era
The biggest storyline for Philadelphia will be its new-look offense.
Jalen Hurts remains the centerpiece, but Sean Mannion takes over as offensive coordinator and is expected to introduce a more timing-based, under-center system. Hurts threw for 3,224 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, and how quickly he adjusts to the new scheme could determine how explosive Philadelphia’s offense becomes.
The Eagles will also lean heavily on Saquon Barkley. The star running back rushed for 1,140 yards last season and has historically been extremely productive against Washington, including 1,222 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in 12 regular-season games.
DeVonta Smith also takes on an even bigger role following the departure of A.J. Brown.
Jayden Daniels Looks to Bounce Back
Washington enters the matchup with plenty to prove.
Jayden Daniels will return as the Commanders’ starting quarterback after an uneven 2025 season. Washington has made significant changes around him, including new offensive coordinator David Blough and defensive coordinator Daronte Jones.
The Commanders also added veteran receiver Stefon Diggs, giving Daniels another major weapon alongside Terry McLaurin. Washington’s offense has plenty of talent, but its offensive line is a major concern after losing left tackle Laremy Tunsil.
Daniels’ ability to escape pressure and make plays with his legs could be critical against Philadelphia’s defensive front.
Eagles Defense Could Decide the Game
Philadelphia’s defense enters the season as one of the team’s biggest strengths.
The Eagles finished sixth in scoring defense last season and have a talented defensive front led by players such as Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis. Their secondary also features Quinyon Mitchell, Riq Woolen and Cooper DeJean.
Philadelphia will have to stay disciplined against Daniels. If the Eagles lose their rush lanes, the Washington quarterback has the athleticism to turn broken plays into huge gains.
The Eagles also have an opportunity to attack Washington’s offensive line, which could be vulnerable against Philadelphia’s deep pass rush.
Key Matchup
The biggest matchup will be Jayden Daniels against the Eagles’ defensive front.
If Philadelphia can pressure Daniels without allowing him to escape the pocket, the Eagles should have a major advantage. But if Daniels gets comfortable and Washington’s receivers create separation, this rivalry could become much more competitive.
Philadelphia has home-field advantage, a stronger defense and more stability entering the season. Washington has enough offensive talent to make things interesting, but the Eagles should have the edge.
