Philadelphia Adds Quarterback Depth
The Philadelphia Eagles are making a move to strengthen their quarterback room, signing Joe Milton III off the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad following the news that Jalen Hurts will miss Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers.
The move comes at a difficult time for Philadelphia, which enters Week 6 at 2-3 after losing three consecutive games. With Hurts sidelined indefinitely because of a superficial blood clot in his calf, the Eagles are adding another option as they try to get their season back on track.
Milton will join Tanner McKee and rookie Cole Payton in Philadelphia’s quarterback room. Because the Eagles are signing him away from another team’s practice squad, he must be placed on their active 53-man roster.
A Fresh Opportunity for Milton
Milton, 26, entered the NFL when the New England Patriots selected him in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The former Tennessee quarterback is known for his powerful arm, impressive physical tools and ability to make plays with his legs.
He appeared in one game for New England during his rookie season, completing 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing score in a win over Buffalo.
Milton later joined Dallas and appeared in four games during the 2025 season. Across five career appearances, he has completed 37 of 53 passes for 424 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Although he has yet to make an NFL start, Milton gives Philadelphia another quarterback with game experience and considerable physical upside.
Tanner McKee Remains the Starter
Milton’s arrival does not change the Eagles’ immediate plan. McKee is expected to start against Carolina, making the third start of his NFL career.
Philadelphia will need McKee to manage the offense, protect the football and find ways to create scoring opportunities while Hurts is unavailable. Payton will also remain part of the quarterback group as the Eagles adjust to the unexpected situation.
The signing gives the team additional depth and more flexibility if Hurts needs an extended recovery period.
A Move With Bigger Implications
Milton’s signing also adds an intriguing storyline to the NFC East rivalry. He leaves Dallas to join Philadelphia just ahead of the teams’ upcoming meeting, giving the quarterback an opportunity to face his former organization later this month.
For now, the Eagles’ focus remains on Carolina and finding a way to stop their losing streak. Milton will have to learn the offense quickly, but his arm strength and athletic ability give Philadelphia another option during an uncertain stretch.
With Hurts’ return timeline still unclear, the Eagles are taking steps to prepare for multiple possibilities as they look to stabilize their season.
