The Contract That Won’t Save Him

The New York Giants are ready to make a bold move that defies financial logic. Darius Slayton might not make the final roster despite holding a massive three-year, $36 million contract. Financial considerations simply will not save Slayton if the coaching staff decides he cannot contribute to the offense, according to NY Post Sports. As the roster shrinks to the 53-player limit this weekend, the squad’s longest-tenured player might face cuts. It seems like a strange decision on paper, but the numbers tell a different story about his value right now.

Reports indicate that Slayton clearly was not moving the same way following surgery to repair a sports hernia. This lack of mobility has put his spot in serious jeopardy. The team assumed he would stay all summer, but that assumption has crumbled under the weight of his performance. John Harbaugh and the new coaching staff will remove him if they decide he cannot contribute as envisioned. The Giants are prioritizing on-field ability over the guaranteed money locked in his deal.

Preseason Snap Counts and Zero Production

The writing was on the wall during Friday night’s third and final preseason game. Slayton not only started; he also played in the second quarter after Jameis Winston yielded to third-string Brandon Allen. While John Harbaugh kept almost all starters on the sideline, Slayton logged a full workload with many players who will not make the squad. He was on the field for 33 snaps on offense, the same as Odell Beckham Jr.

His usage was right behind the top-usage wide receivers, Dalen Cambre and Isaiah Hodgins, with 33 snaps apiece. Even with that significant field time, neither Winston nor Allen targeted Slayton, leaving him with zero receptions. The contrast with other players was stark and painful for his standing. Xavier Gipson, possessing special teams value Slayton lacks, caught a 37-yard touchdown and played 25 snaps. The lack of targets and production in the final game sealed his fate according to the reporting.

The financial reality is brutal for the franchise. Slayton’s base salary for 2026 is $12.5 million and his salary cap hit is a bloated $15.9 million. The guaranteed money for this season is $9.7 million and if he is released, that hit remains on the books. However, the team seems willing to eat that cost rather than keep a player who cannot move well. The Post has learned that the decision to cut him is likely imminent regardless of the cost.

A Hard Truth for the Giants

This situation proves that a contract is not a life sentence in the NFL. The Giants have shown they will not let a bloated salary cap hit dictate their roster construction. They need players who can execute the offense, not just players who have been around a long time. Slayton’s inability to get open or get targeted in a low-stakes game is a massive red flag for the coaching staff. The new regime under John Harbaugh wants speed and reliability, and Slayton simply did not show either.

Cutting a player with $9.7 million in guaranteed money is painful, but keeping him hurts more in the long run. The team must clear space for players who can actually help them win games this season. Slayton’s tenure is over because he failed to prove he belongs on the field when it mattered most. The Giants are making a statement that performance trumps history every single time.

Final Roster Deadline Looms

The clock is ticking down for Slayton to remain on the team. The Giants get down to the 53-player limit this weekend.
