Tight end’s rare production through two games puts him in elite company
INDIANAPOLIS — Tyler Warren is doing what rookie tight ends almost never do. He’s dominating from the start.
The Indianapolis Colts’ first-round pick has opened his career with 11 catches for 155 yards in just two games, instantly becoming one of quarterback Daniel Jones’ most trusted targets. In Week 1 against Miami, Warren caught seven passes for 76 yards. He followed that up in Week 2 with four more grabs for 79 yards in a narrow win over Denver.
Those numbers may sound impressive on their own, but what makes them historic is how rarely rookies at Warren’s position put up that kind of production this quickly. Tight end is widely regarded as one of the toughest transitions from college to the pros. Most rookies spend their first year learning blocking schemes and adjusting to faster defenders, which usually limits their offensive impact.
Warren is shattering those expectations. His 155 receiving yards through two games place him among the top rookie tight end starts in NFL history. Only a handful of players — names like Mike Ditka in 1961 or Kyle Pitts in 2021 — have reached similar marks in their first two games. By comparison, many Pro Bowl tight ends started their careers with fewer than 10 catches in the opening month.
Equally striking is how Warren is producing his numbers. Averaging 14.1 yards per reception, he isn’t just catching check-down throws; he’s stretching the field and generating explosive plays. His size and athleticism are creating mismatches, and the Colts have leaned heavily on him with 16 targets already, making him one of the most-targeted tight ends in the league.
That workload underscores how unusual this debut is. Coaches rarely design so much of the offense around a rookie at the position, yet Warren has already become central to Indianapolis’ passing attack.
The question now is sustainability. Two games do not make a season, and defensive coordinators will adjust. But Warren’s combination of production, usage and explosiveness has set a tone few rookies at his position have ever matched.
The Colts drafted Warren to be a long-term building block. Through two games, he has already made NFL history — and hinted at a future where he could redefine what’s possible for a rookie tight end.
