Christopher Vizzina’s time has finally arrived, but his first game as Clemson’s starting quarterback could hardly be more challenging.
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney announced Tuesday that Vizzina will start Saturday’s season opener against No. 11 LSU, officially ending the quarterback competition between Vizzina and freshman Tait Reynolds. After spending the first three seasons of his Clemson career behind Cade Klubnik, Vizzina will now get his opportunity to lead the Tigers.
And his first assignment will take him into one of the loudest environments in college football: Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, also known as Death Valley.
Vizzina has appeared in 14 games during his Clemson career but has made only one previous start. That came last season against SMU, when he completed 29 of 42 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns. He enters this season with limited starting experience but has spent years learning Clemson’s offense and preparing for this opportunity.
Now, he’ll have to handle the pressure of playing on the road against a ranked LSU team in front of a massive national audience.
The challenge is even bigger because Clemson is looking to bounce back from a disappointing 7-6 season in 2025. The Tigers also lost Klubnik, who departed for the NFL after establishing himself as the team’s starter for multiple seasons.
Vizzina knows the moment will be difficult, but he appears ready for it. Following the announcement, he described the opportunity to start at LSU as something he had been preparing for and expressed excitement about playing in Tiger Stadium.
Clemson will need Vizzina to remain composed early. LSU’s defense will likely look to test the new starter with pressure and force him to make quick decisions. Avoiding turnovers and keeping the offense on schedule could be critical if the Tigers want to leave Baton Rouge with a victory.
The matchup also features another first-year starter on the opposite sideline. LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt will make his debut for the Tigers after transferring from Arizona State, while new LSU head coach Lane Kiffin will coach his first game in Baton Rouge.
Clemson and LSU met in last year’s season opener, with LSU winning 17-10 in Clemson. This time, the Tigers will travel to Baton Rouge looking for revenge.
For Vizzina, however, the storyline is simple.
After waiting three seasons for his opportunity, he finally gets the keys to the Clemson offense. Now he’ll have to prove he can handle the pressure — with his first true test coming under the lights at Death Valley.
