The rivalry just got a lot more personal.
Fresh off helping the New York Knicks win their first NBA championship in more than five decades, Mitchell Robinson is heading to Boston after agreeing to a three-year, $47.4 million contract with the Celtics. The deal includes a player option in the third season.
For Knicks fans, this one hurts.
Robinson wasn’t just another role player. He was the longest-tenured Knick, drafted in 2018 and developed entirely within the organization. Over eight seasons, he evolved into one of the NBA’s premier offensive rebounders and rim protectors, becoming a key part of New York’s championship run.
Now he’ll be wearing Celtic green.
Boston’s interest is easy to understand. The Celtics needed frontcourt size, rebounding, and interior defense. Robinson provides all three. Last season he averaged 8.8 rebounds in fewer than 20 minutes per game while shooting 72.3% from the field. Few players impact the glass the way he does.
The move also feels very “Celtics.”
Boston doesn’t need Robinson to score 15 points per game. They need him to defend the rim, grab offensive rebounds, finish lobs, and do the dirty work that wins playoff games. He fits that role perfectly.
For the Knicks, financial realities appear to have played a major role. The organization was trying to stay below the NBA’s second apron, making it difficult to match the type of offer Robinson received on the open market. Once free agency opened, the writing was on the wall.
What makes this move sting even more is the destination.
If Robinson had signed with a rebuilding team, Knicks fans probably would have wished him well. Instead, he joins one of New York’s biggest rivals and a team that expects to contend immediately.
The Celtics just got tougher, bigger, and better defensively.
And the Knicks just lost a fan favorite.
Expect the first Celtics-Knicks matchup of the season to have a little extra juice.
