SLINGER, Wis. — Casey Johnson finally has his Slinger Nationals trophy.
After years of chasing one of grassroots racing’s most prestigious victories, the Wisconsin short-track veteran delivered a storybook ending Tuesday night, surviving one of the wildest editions of the Slinger Nationals in recent memory to earn the biggest victory of his career at Slinger Speedway.
For Johnson, the win was years in the making. Few drivers know Slinger Speedway better, and after countless laps around the famed quarter-mile, the Badger State standout finally added his name to one of short-track racing’s most coveted lists of champions.
The race itself had everything fans could ask for.
Ty Majeski controlled much of the night and looked poised to add another marquee victory before tire wear, attrition and changing track conditions turned the race upside down. As the laps wound down, the battle for the lead intensified, with multiple contenders refusing to give an inch.
Richard Childress Racing prospect Carson Brown somehow brought home a third-place finish despite nursing a heavily damaged race car through the closing laps. The young standout remained in contention until the very end, squeezing every ounce of speed out of battered equipment.
NASCAR Cup Series driver Carson Hocevar also added another memorable chapter to the evening. After an apparent engine failure ended his race early, Hocevar didn’t disappear into the garage. Instead, he joined the FloRacing broadcast booth and spent the remainder of the race helping call the action, bringing the same enthusiasm fans have come to expect whenever he’s around a race track.
