The Blue Sharks pushed defending champion Argentina to the edge Friday night, losing 3-2 in extra time in one of the best matches of the tournament. Lionel Messi and Argentina survived, but Cape Verde became the story.
For a nation of roughly 500,000 people, this was never supposed to happen. Cape Verde reached its first World Cup, made the knockout stage and then stood toe-to-toe with the reigning champions. It equalized twice, played with bravery and nearly forced penalties before Argentina escaped late.
Coach Bubista said his team represented the country with pride, and that is exactly what made the run special. Cape Verde did not play like a team happy to be there. It played like a team that believed it belonged.
Goalkeeper Vozinha became one of the tournament’s cult heroes, while Sidny Lopes Cabral’s extra-time goal gave Cape Verde a moment that will live forever. Even in defeat, the Blue Sharks gave their country a World Cup identity: fearless, organized and impossible to dismiss.
Argentina moves on. Cape Verde goes home. But the Blue Sharks dignified their country and delivered one of the great underdog stories this World Cup has seen.
