Kansas City Looks Like a Championship Contender Again

The Kansas City Chiefs are starting to look like the team that dominated the NFL for much of the Patrick Mahomes era. After missing the playoffs last season, Kansas City has opened the 2026 campaign with five consecutive victories and is once again building momentum toward a potential Super Bowl run.

Mahomes remains the centerpiece of the Chiefs’ championship hopes, but this season has featured an important difference: he no longer has to carry the offense by himself. With a stronger running game and an improving defense, Kansas City has several reasons to believe it can return to football’s biggest stage.

Kenneth Walker Gives Mahomes Another Weapon

One of the biggest additions to Kansas City’s offense has been running back Kenneth Walker III. His explosive running has given the Chiefs a consistent ground attack, making it more difficult for opposing defenses to focus entirely on stopping Mahomes.

Walker rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday’s 22-6 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. His performance helped Kansas City remain undefeated while allowing the offense to control the game without relying exclusively on the passing attack.

Mahomes also delivered another strong performance, throwing for 272 yards. The quarterback has looked increasingly comfortable as the season has progressed, and the balance between the passing and running games could become crucial against stronger playoff opponents.

Defense Could Determine Kansas City’s Ceiling

The Chiefs’ defense has also played an important role in their early success. Kansas City has applied pressure to opposing quarterbacks, limited scoring opportunities and helped the offense maintain control of games.

That defensive consistency will be especially important in the postseason, when Kansas City could face elite quarterbacks and offenses capable of scoring quickly.

Head coach Andy Reid and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo have extensive experience preparing teams for high pressure playoff games. Their ability to adjust against different opponents could give the Chiefs an advantage when the stakes rise.

Is Another Super Bowl Run Realistic?

There is still plenty of football left to play, and Kansas City will face tougher tests as the season continues. Staying healthy, protecting Mahomes and maintaining the defense’s strong start will be essential.

However, the early signs are encouraging. Mahomes has championship experience, Walker has transformed the running game, and the Chiefs are winning convincingly.

If Kansas City continues playing this way, a return to the Super Bowl is a realistic possibility. The Chiefs have rediscovered their confidence, and their undefeated start suggests they should be taken seriously as contenders once again.
