TALLADEGA, Ala. — The speed is not the question for Bubba Wallace.
Week after week — especially on superspeedways — Wallace shows he has the pace to run with the best in the NASCAR Cup Series. He qualifies well, controls lanes in the draft and consistently positions himself near the front when it matters most.
In many ways, he looks a lot like his teammate at 23XI Racing — fast, assertive and capable of taking over a race.
The difference is in the results column.
While the speed has been there, the wins have not come with the same consistency. Wallace has put himself in contention multiple times, only to see races slip away due to late incidents, strategy swings or the unpredictable nature of superspeedway racing.
Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway felt like another opportunity.
Wallace ran up front for much of the race, executed the draft effectively and entered the closing stages with a car capable of winning. He avoided early trouble and showed the kind of race management that typically pays off late at Talladega.
It looked promising.
But like so many races at the 2.66-mile oval, the outcome changed in an instant. A multi-car crash ended his day and erased what had been shaping into a strong result. Instead of fighting for a win, Wallace was left with another “what could have been.”
It’s a familiar storyline.
The performance reinforces his ability. The result adds to the frustration.
For Wallace, the equation remains the same. The speed is there. The opportunities are real. The challenge is turning those chances into victories — something that often requires both execution and a measure of luck, especially at tracks like Talladega.
Sunday showed he is close.
It also showed how quickly that can change.
