The Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans will open their 2026 seasons Sunday in one of the most anticipated matchups of Week 1.
Buffalo will travel to Houston for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff at Reliant Stadium, with both teams coming off playoff appearances last season. The Texans have also turned Houston into a nightmare destination for Buffalo, winning each of their last four regular-season meetings at home.
For Buffalo, this game marks the beginning of the Joe Brady era. Brady takes over as head coach after previously serving as the team’s offensive coordinator, while Josh Allen remains the centerpiece of the Bills’ championship aspirations.
Josh Allen Faces Familiar Challenge
Allen enters the season once again among the NFL’s elite quarterbacks, but Houston has consistently given him problems.
The Texans recorded eight sacks against Allen in last year’s meeting, and Allen has struggled historically when playing in Houston. Buffalo will need to keep its quarterback clean while finding ways to attack one of the league’s best defenses.
The Bills did add more firepower to their offense, including veteran receiver DJ Moore. James Cook will also be a major part of the game plan as Buffalo looks to establish the running game and prevent Houston from simply attacking Allen through the air.
Texans Defense Ready for Another Test
Houston’s defense was the team’s biggest strength last season, and the Texans spent the offseason trying to make it even better.
Will Anderson Jr. remains the centerpiece of the pass rush, while Houston added more talent to a unit that finished among the NFL’s best. The Texans will once again try to make life miserable for Allen and force Buffalo into long-yardage situations.
Houston has won its last four regular-season home games against Buffalo, making this one of the most difficult road environments the Bills could face to begin the season.
C.J. Stroud Looks to Bounce Back
On the other side, C.J. Stroud enters a critical season for the Texans.
After an outstanding rookie campaign, Stroud has struggled with consistency since then. Houston has worked to improve the offense around him, including adding veteran running back David Montgomery and strengthening the offensive line.
The Texans will need Stroud to avoid turnovers and take advantage of Buffalo’s new-look defense. The Bills finished 28th against the run last season, so establishing Montgomery and the ground game could be a major part of Houston’s strategy.
Key Matchup
The biggest battle will be Josh Allen against Houston’s pass rush.
If Houston can pressure Allen like it did last season, the Texans have a great chance to control the game. But if Buffalo’s offensive line can give Allen time, the Bills have enough weapons to put serious pressure on Houston’s secondary.
Meanwhile, Buffalo’s new defense under coordinator Jim Leonhard will have to prove it can stop the run and limit explosive plays.
This could easily be one of the best games of Week 1.
Both teams have legitimate AFC championship aspirations, but Houston has the home-field advantage and has consistently played well against Buffalo in this building.
Expect another close battle in Houston.
