There might not be another player I’m more interested to watch this weekend than DJ Lagway.
We already know about the talent.
Now we find out whether a fresh start can finally unlock it.
Lagway transferred to Baylor after throwing for 4,179 yards and 28 touchdowns during two seasons at Florida, and he’s already been named one of the Bears’ permanent captains.
But Baylor isn’t exactly making things easy for its new quarterback.
The Bears have to replace their top five pass catchers and four starters along the offensive line, meaning Lagway will be surrounded by plenty of new faces.
And his first test comes against an SEC opponent.
Auburn is beginning a new era of its own under Alex Golesh, who brought quarterback Byrum Brown and several familiar pieces from South Florida with him.
Golesh’s offenses have traditionally played fast and scored points.
Now he gets SEC talent to work with.
Playing at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta should also create something pretty close to a home-field advantage for Auburn.
I think Lagway makes enough plays to remind everyone why he was once one of the most highly regarded quarterbacks in the country.
I just don’t think Baylor has enough around him yet.
