For years, the Atlanta Falcons have had exciting offensive talent without turning it into sustained success. Now, Atlanta appears to be taking a different approach: draft your stars, develop them and pay them before they can leave.
And the Falcons are spending serious money to make it happen.
Atlanta signed wide receiver Drake London to a four-year, $141 million extension, including $100 million guaranteed, with incentives that can push the deal to $150 million. The contract keeps London with the Falcons through the 2030 season.
Then came Bijan Robinson.
The Falcons signed their superstar running back to a historic three-year extension worth up to $75 million with $51 million guaranteed. At $25 million per year, Robinson becomes the highest-paid running back in NFL history.
That’s potentially $216 million committed to London and Robinson alone.
But maybe that’s exactly what Atlanta should be doing.
Both players were top-10 draft picks by the Falcons, developed into legitimate NFL stars and have become centerpieces of the offense. Instead of allowing those players to eventually reach free agency or creating unnecessary contract drama, Atlanta has made it clear that they’re part of the long-term plan.
Robinson gives the Falcons one of football’s most dynamic running backs, while London provides their quarterback with a true No. 1 receiver. Together, they give Atlanta two elite building blocks who are still entering the primes of their careers.
That’s how successful franchises are supposed to operate.
Of course, there is one massive piece that will determine whether these contracts ultimately matter: quarterback. You can have an elite running back and receiver, but without consistent quarterback play, there’s a ceiling on how far an offense can go.
Still, Atlanta’s philosophy finally makes sense.
Drake London: four years, $141 million.
Bijan Robinson: three years, up to $75 million.
The Falcons are betting more than $200 million on two of their biggest offensive stars.
Now they need to prove that locking up the weapons is only the beginning — and that Atlanta is finally building an offense capable of becoming a contender.
