Angel Reese is making her feelings known, and the WNBA Finals have officially reached a boiling point. After the Atlanta Dream suffered a frustrating 64-55 loss to the Golden State Valkyries in Game 5, Reese questioned the officiating as Atlanta moved to the brink of elimination.
The Valkyries now hold a 3-2 series lead and are just one win away from capturing the franchise’s first WNBA championship. For Reese and the Dream, the pressure could not be higher heading into Game 6.
Reese Believes the Calls Have Changed
Following Monday night’s defeat, Reese expressed frustration with the physicality she has faced throughout the series. She believes officials have allowed too much contact without consistently calling fouls.
Reese also suggested the officiating changed after Atlanta took a 2-1 series advantage.
The comments come after two difficult offensive performances for the Dream star. Reese finished Game 5 with seven points, 15 rebounds and five assists while shooting 2-of-8 from the field. She also scored just eight points in Game 4 as Golden State’s defense made life increasingly difficult for Atlanta.
Despite her scoring struggles, Reese continued to contribute on the boards and as a facilitator. However, the Dream need more offensive production from their star if they hope to extend the series.
Dream Coach Backs His Star
Head coach Karl Smesko also criticized the officiating, strongly defending Reese after the loss. He argued that the amount of contact allowed against her was excessive and believed Atlanta should have received additional free throws.
The frustration adds another layer of drama to an already physical championship series. Golden State, meanwhile, has won two consecutive games and has found ways to slow down Atlanta’s offense.
Can Angel Reese Lead a Comeback?
The Dream now face a must-win situation in Game 6 on Thursday in Atlanta. A victory would force a decisive Game 7, while another loss would end their championship hopes.
Reese and her teammates must find answers quickly. The officiating controversy may continue to dominate headlines, but Atlanta ultimately needs better shooting and stronger offensive execution.
With the season on the line, all eyes will be on Reese to see whether she can respond when her team needs her most.
