The Atlanta Dream Had A WNBA Championship Within Reach And Watched It Slip Away

The Atlanta Dream were two wins away from a championship. Instead, they are left wondering how a promising Finals run unraveled so quickly.

Atlanta took a 2-1 lead over the Golden State Valkyries after two convincing victories. Angel Reese delivered 30 points and 16 rebounds in Game 2, while the Dream won Game 3 by 26 points.

Then everything changed.

Golden State won Game 4, 67-62, before closing the series with a 64-55 victory in Game 5. Atlanta managed only 117 combined points across those final two games.

For a team that had championship ambitions, the finish was brutal.

The Offense Disappeared When It Mattered Most

The Valkyries deserve credit for adjusting defensively. They disrupted Atlanta’s rhythm, contested shots and made the Dream uncomfortable.

But Atlanta also struggled to find answers.

Reese scored just eight points in Game 4 and seven in Game 5. Rhyne Howard led Atlanta with 19 points in Game 4, but the Dream could not generate enough offense to protect their series lead.

The shooting numbers told the story. Golden State held Atlanta to 33.3% shooting in Game 4 and followed it with another defensive performance that limited the Dream to 55 points.

At that point, blaming one player would miss the bigger problem.

Atlanta needed multiple players to step up. It never found the consistent offensive response required to close out the series.

This Was An Opportunity The Dream Cannot Take For Granted

Reaching the Finals is an accomplishment. Atlanta should not lose sight of that after a painful ending.

But the Dream also had a chance to win the franchise’s first championship. They held the lead in the series and had momentum after a dominant Game 3.

Golden State adjusted. Atlanta did not respond well enough.

That is the lesson the Dream must confront during the offseason. Championship teams need more than a strong start, a dominant star or one impressive win. They need answers when the opponent changes the game.

Atlanta came close enough to see the trophy within reach. That makes the final two losses even harder to swallow.

The Dream proved they could compete for a championship. Now they must prove this run was the beginning of something bigger, not their best chance gone to waste.
