Anthony Edwards to Undergo Knee Surgery, Could Miss Two Months

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been dealt a major blow, as superstar Anthony Edwards is expected to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and could miss up to two months. The news comes after Edwards battled knee discomfort during the opening week of the 2026-27 NBA season, raising concerns about his long-term availability.

Edwards has been one of the league’s most explosive players to begin the season, but the latest development puts Minnesota’s early campaign in a difficult position. Losing its leading scorer for an extended period would force the Timberwolves to adjust their offense and find ways to remain competitive without their franchise cornerstone.

Edwards’ Knee Issues Lead to Surgery

The knee concerns became more noticeable during Minnesota’s recent victory over the Toronto Raptors. Edwards appeared to favor his right knee at different points, prompting questions about whether he was dealing with more than routine soreness.

Despite the discomfort, Edwards suited up against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night and delivered a spectacular performance. He scored 47 points in 41 minutes during Minnesota’s 127-125 overtime loss, showing just how important he is to the team’s offense.

However, the decision to undergo surgery indicates that the issue requires further attention. The procedure is expected to sideline Edwards for up to two months, although his exact return date will depend on his recovery and any updates from the Timberwolves.

The potential absence is particularly frustrating because Edwards had opened the season playing at an elite level. His scoring ability, athleticism and leadership have made him the driving force behind Minnesota’s championship ambitions.

Timberwolves Face a Major Challenge

Without Edwards, Minnesota will need contributions from the rest of its roster to make up for the lost production. The coaching staff could look to players such as Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert to take on larger responsibilities while the backcourt adjusts to Edwards’ absence.

The Timberwolves will also need other guards to create offense, attack the basket and provide consistent scoring. Replacing Edwards’ production will be difficult, especially against the Western Conference’s strongest teams.

What This Means for Minnesota

The priority now is ensuring Edwards fully recovers rather than rushing him back onto the court. Although a potential two month absence would be a significant setback, protecting the long-term health of the team’s biggest star is essential.

Minnesota still has time to navigate the regular season, but the next several weeks will test its depth and resilience. If the supporting cast can keep the team competitive, the Timberwolves could remain in position to contend once Edwards returns.

For now, Minnesota must prepare to move forward without its superstar while hoping the surgery gets him back to full strength.
