FIFA is reconsidering its controversial Peace Prize after awarding Donald Trump the inaugural honor, raising serious questions about the award’s future.

President Donald Trump received FIFA’s first-ever Peace Prize in December 2025, but less than a year later, the organization is already reconsidering whether the award should even exist.

According to Front Office Sports, FIFA’s governing council has directed its Football Social Responsibility Committee to review the controversial award, including whether it should continue and whether its selection criteria need to change.

Trump received the inaugural honor from FIFA president Gianni Infantino during the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, D.C. At the time, Trump described the recognition as one of the greatest honors of his life.

However, the decision immediately sparked criticism from several international soccer federations, with some questioning why FIFA was getting involved in political recognition in the first place.

The controversy has only intensified following the United States’ involvement in military strikes against Iran earlier this year. Critics have questioned whether a sitting president involved in an ongoing military conflict should receive an international peace award.

The White House has defended the decision, arguing that Trump’s foreign policy has helped end multiple conflicts and that he deserved the recognition.

Now, FIFA officials are considering whether the award should be eliminated entirely or restructured to prevent similar controversies.

English Football Association president Debbie Hewitt has also questioned the original decision-making process, including whether the award should have been created in the first place.

Imagine creating an award, giving it to Donald Trump, and then reconsidering the entire award less than a year later.

FIFA has not announced a final decision, but the situation has created another headache for Infantino, whose relationship with Trump has already drawn criticism.

The biggest question now is whether Trump will go down as the first and only recipient of the FIFA Peace Prize.

That would certainly be one of the strangest honors in sports history.
