Tar Heels Pull Off Impressive Road Upset

North Carolina delivered one of its biggest victories of the season Saturday, defeating No. 25 Pittsburgh 21-17 at Acrisure Stadium. The Tar Heels came through in the biggest moments, using a spectacular fourth-quarter touchdown pass and a strong defensive finish to hand Pitt its first loss of the season.

The victory improved North Carolina to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. It also marked head coach Bill Belichick’s first victory over a ranked opponent since taking over the Tar Heels program.

Pittsburgh, coached by Pat Narduzzi, entered the game undefeated at 5-0 but struggled to finish drives in the second half. Despite holding advantages in total yards and time of possession, the Panthers could not overcome North Carolina’s timely defensive stops.

Pitt Takes Early Control

Pittsburgh started the game with an effective opening drive, moving the ball downfield before running back La’Vell Wright scored on a short touchdown run. The Panthers added a field goal in the second quarter to take a 10-0 lead.

North Carolina responded with a quick scoring drive of its own. Quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. connected with Jelani Thurman for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 10-7 before halftime.

Edwards helped the Tar Heels stay within striking distance, but the game became increasingly challenging after the break. Both teams traded turnovers during a chaotic third quarter, creating opportunities without immediately producing points.

North Carolina eventually took its first lead when running back Demon June scored on a one-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. The score put the Tar Heels ahead 14-10 and gave their defense a chance to take control.

Edwards and Easter Deliver the Decisive Play

Pitt refused to go away quietly. Wright scored his second rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter, putting the Panthers back in front 17-14 with less than 13 minutes remaining.

North Carolina answered almost immediately.

On the first play of the Tar Heels’ next possession, Edwards found wide receiver Shamar Easter downfield for a 75-yard touchdown. The explosive connection caught the Pittsburgh defense off guard and gave North Carolina a 21-17 lead.

Edwards finished with 249 passing yards and two touchdowns, completing 18 of 26 attempts. He also threw two interceptions, but his connection with Easter ultimately delivered the game’s biggest play.

Easter’s touchdown proved decisive as North Carolina’s defense took over during the closing minutes.

Defense Seals the Upset

Pittsburgh had several opportunities to reclaim the lead, but the Tar Heels repeatedly came up with crucial stops. North Carolina forced three consecutive turnovers on downs late in the fourth quarter, refusing to allow the Panthers to reach the end zone again.

Pitt quarterback Holden Geriner, making his first career collegiate start, completed 27 of 44 passes for 219 yards and threw two interceptions. Wright finished with two rushing touchdowns, but Pittsburgh could not find another scoring play when it mattered most.

The Panthers finished with more total yards than North Carolina, yet the Tar Heels made the most of their opportunities and delivered when the game was on the line.

Belichick Gets a Statement Victory

The win gives Belichick and North Carolina an important boost as they continue building the program. Beating a ranked opponent on the road provides momentum and demonstrates the team’s ability to compete in close games.

North Carolina will now turn its attention to next Saturday’s rivalry matchup against Duke. Pittsburgh will look to bounce back when it faces Boston College.

For the Tar Heels, Saturday was a statement win built on a clutch passing play and a defense that refused to break.
