Texas A&M came into this season with legitimate expectations, but there is one massive problem holding the Aggies back: Marcel Reed simply hasn’t been good enough.
At this point, it’s becoming difficult to defend his play.
Reed has the athleticism. He can make plays with his legs, extend drives and occasionally flash the talent that made people believe he could become one of the SEC’s better quarterbacks. But being athletic isn’t enough when you’re playing quarterback for a program trying to compete for championships.
The passing game has been far too inconsistent. Reed misses throws that should be routine, struggles to consistently push the ball downfield and has stretches where the entire offense feels stuck. When Texas A&M needs its quarterback to take control of a game, Reed hasn’t consistently shown that he can do it.
That’s the biggest issue.
You can survive mediocre quarterback play against weaker opponents. You aren’t surviving it when the schedule gets serious and you’re facing SEC defenses every week.
Texas A&M has too much talent and too many expectations to settle for this level of quarterback play. Reed doesn’t need to be a Heisman candidate, but he needs to become significantly more consistent as a passer.
Right now, though? He’s been horrible.
And if that doesn’t change quickly, quarterback could be the exact reason Texas A&M’s season never becomes what people thought it could be.
