Smith wasted no time making his presence felt. He caught a seven-yard touchdown on Ohio State’s opening possession before following it up with a spectacular 72-yard touchdown reception on the Buckeyes’ next drive.
The second score showcased Smith’s explosiveness, as he beat the Illinois defense downfield and turned the play into a long touchdown. Ohio State quickly built a 14-0 lead, with Smith responsible for both scores.
But Smith wasn’t finished.
He continued to find the end zone throughout the afternoon, finishing with four touchdown receptions. That performance tied Ohio State’s single-game record for receiving touchdowns, putting Smith in elite company in Buckeyes history.
Another Historic Day for the Buckeyes’ Star
Smith has been making history throughout the 2026 season, and Saturday was another major milestone.
Just one week after becoming Ohio State’s all-time leader in career receiving yards, Smith became the first wide receiver in program history to reach 3,000 career receiving yards. He reached the mark during the first quarter against Illinois, adding another accomplishment to an already remarkable career.
The scary part for opposing defenses is that Smith is still only a junior. His combination of size, speed, route-running and ability to make difficult catches has made him a nightmare matchup.
Ohio State Opens Big Ten Play With a Win
While Smith stole the spotlight, the Buckeyes also got the job done as a team.
Ohio State entered the matchup looking to build momentum after its dominant victory over Kent State. The win over Illinois gives the Buckeyes another positive result as they begin the conference portion of their schedule.
