Around the league, the inquiry centers on the longevity of the pairing between Kyrie and the Mavericks. This situation does not stem from a lack of affection the Mavericks hold for Kyrie. They do. Kyrie’s sentiment toward Dallas remains positive, and he has thoroughly enjoyed his time there. MacMahon noted that the organization is constructing its future around 19-year-old prodigy Cooper Flagg.
People across the league will watch closely as the trade deadline approaches. A move for the Hall of Fame guard won’t happen immediately. It likely won’t occur until this season’s deadline or the next offseason.
The Lakers Search for Help

This move would pair the 28-year-old with Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, Walker Kessler, Sexton, and Quentin Grimes. “For the Lakers, the logic is clear,” Sapetka wrote on his trade idea.
The proposed deal sends Dalton Knecht, Jarred Vanderbilt, and a 2032 second-round pick to Dallas. This package helps the Mavericks get a shooter like Knecht who fits the Flagg timeline. It also helps Dallas manage money. To exit Washington’s longer contract, Dallas would likely accept Vanderbilt’s $13.3 million player option for 2027-28, giving the Lakers an edge in pursuing Washington.
Washington is a great option for Los Angeles. “If L.A. recognizes its need at power forward, Washington is a strong fit as a former Dončić teammate who is a willing role player, defender, and shooter,” Sapetka noted.
Why the Lakers Must Act
The Lakers can’t sit around and wait for things to happen. They need talent that fits a winning window right now. Bringing in a player like Washington provides the defensive versatility and shooting the roster lacks. It turns a thin rotation into a deep, championship-ready unit.
If the team misses out on Washington, the Irving rumors will only get louder. The Lakers must use their assets to fix the starting lineup. They can’t afford to let the roster stagnate while other teams get stronger. A trade for a veteran star or a high-level role player is the only way to stay relevant in a crowded Western Conference.
