Something feels different in Gainesville.
After several seasons of inconsistency, the Florida Gators are finally giving their fans a reason to believe again. Florida has opened the 2026 season 3-0, picked up an SEC road victory over Auburn and returned to the AP Top 25.
The Gators are ranked No. 21 in the latest AP poll, marking their first appearance in the rankings since the beginning of the 2025 season.
And perhaps most importantly, this isn’t simply a team beating up on lesser competition. Florida just went into Jordan Hare Stadium and defeated Auburn 44-39 in its first SEC game of the season.
Aaron Philo Is Giving Florida Confidence
One of the biggest reasons for Florida’s hot start has been quarterback Aaron Philo.
The former Georgia Tech quarterback entered the season with plenty of expectations, but he has quickly shown that he can handle the pressure of being Florida’s starting quarterback.
Through the first two games, Philo had completed 32 of 42 passes for 501 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.
Then came his first SEC road start.
Against Auburn, Philo completed 15 of 22 passes for 204 yards, one touchdown and one interception, helping the Gators put together an offense that produced 495 total yards. Florida also went 5 for 5 in the red zone and 3 for 3 on fourth down.
Philo doesn’t have to carry the entire offense, either. Running back Jadan Baugh has been spectacular, rushing for 162 yards and three touchdowns against Auburn.
That balance has allowed Florida to put pressure on opposing defenses in multiple ways.
Jon Sumrall Has Changed the Feeling in Gainesville
While the players deserve the credit for what is happening on the field, first-year head coach Jon Sumrall has quickly started changing the culture around the program.
Sumrall arrived at Florida after successful stops at Troy and Tulane, and his first three games have provided an immediate indication of what he wants the Gators to become.
Florida is now 3-0 for the first time since 2019, and the win over Auburn was the program’s first victory at Jordan Hare since 1999.
Sumrall has repeatedly emphasized preparation, toughness and staying focused on the next challenge.
That mentality was tested against Auburn.
Florida had to play in a hostile environment against an SEC opponent, but the Gators never backed down. They controlled much of the game and found enough plays late to secure the victory.
“We found a way,” Sumrall said after the win, emphasizing his team’s preparation for the hostile road environment.
The Gators Are Ranked Again
Now, the expectations are changing.
Florida entered the season with plenty of questions after a disappointing 2025 campaign. Three games later, the Gators are ranked, undefeated and preparing to host No. 4 Ole Miss in Gainesville.
The matchup will be another major test, but Florida has already accomplished something important: it has restored excitement around the program.
The Gators aren’t being ranked because of preseason expectations anymore. They earned their spot by starting 3-0 and winning an SEC road game.
There is still a long season ahead, but the combination of Philo’s steady play, Baugh’s explosive running and Sumrall’s new culture has Florida believing again.
