The Ducks entered this season ranked No. 2 in the country and looked like one of the safest national championship picks in college football.
Two games later?
They’re 1-1 and ranked No. 21.
And somehow, their record doesn’t even explain how bad this start has been.
Week 1 should have been the warning sign.
Oregon struggled badly against Boise State, falling behind 17-7 before eventually escaping with a comeback victory.
It wasn’t pretty, but you could excuse it.
First game. Good opponent. Shake off the rust and move on.
Then Oklahoma State happened.
This is an Oklahoma State program that went 1-11 last season, lost its opener to Tulsa and entered Saturday riding a ridiculous 21-game losing streak against FBS opponents.
Oregon was favored by more than three touchdowns.
The Ducks lost 39-31.
And don’t let the eight-point final margin fool you.
Oregon got dominated.
Oklahoma State outgained the Ducks 554-281.
Drew Mestemaker threw for 317 yards and two touchdowns and added another 109 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Oregon’s offense produced just 281 total yards. Dante Moore finished with only 191 passing yards, and the Ducks struggled to run the football or protect him.
The craziest part?
Oregon’s defense actually scored a 96-yard pick-six and produced another interception that was returned to the Oklahoma State 1-yard line.
Those two plays essentially gifted Oregon 14 points, and the Ducks still lost.
Dan Lanning didn’t even try to sugarcoat it afterward, acknowledging Oregon got its butt kicked in several areas.
He’s right.
This wasn’t some fluky upset where Oregon dominated the box score and Oklahoma State got a couple lucky bounces.
Oklahoma State was better.
That’s terrifying considering Oregon beat this same program 69-3 last season.
Think about that.
A year ago, Oregon won by 66 points.
Now it just lost to them.
And we’re starting to see an actual pattern.
Oregon has allowed 34 points to Boise State and 39 to Oklahoma State. The Ducks have repeatedly started slowly offensively, committed 17 penalties through two games and suddenly don’t look dominant at the line of scrimmage.
That is not what anybody expected from a team with national championship aspirations.
Maybe Oregon figures everything out.
There’s still plenty of season remaining, and one early loss doesn’t eliminate anybody in the 12-team playoff era.
But the schedule isn’t exactly going to get easier.
Games against USC, Ohio State, Michigan and Washington are still coming.
If Oregon plays anything like this against those teams?
Forget winning a national championship.
The Ducks might have trouble making the College Football Playoff.
Oregon entered 2026 looking like one of the most talented teams in America.
Two weeks later, the Ducks have barely survived Boise State and suffered arguably the most embarrassing loss of Dan Lanning’s tenure.
So yeah.
It’s only September.
But it’s completely fair to ask:
What the heck is going on at Oregon?
