The Yankees had a golden opportunity to strengthen their roster at the trade deadline, but Brian Cashman failed to address the team’s two biggest weaknesses: catcher and the bullpen. For a club with World Series aspirations, that is an enormous gamble.
The biggest disappointment came behind the plate. The Yankees were heavily rumored to be in the mix for Orioles star Adley Rutschman, yet they failed to get a deal done. Instead, they watched one of their biggest rivals, the Boston Red Sox, land the franchise catcher in the blockbuster move of the deadline.
That makes the deadline even more frustrating from the Yankees’ perspective. Not only did they fail to fill their most glaring hole, but they also allowed a division rival to dramatically improve while Baltimore dealt one of its franchise cornerstones within the AL East. If the Yankees truly believed Rutschman was the answer at catcher, they needed to be the team willing to pay the price.
The bullpen was another obvious need that went largely unaddressed. Injuries and inconsistency have left the relief corps vulnerable, and adding another proven late-inning arm should have been a priority for a team with championship expectations.
Cashman has built plenty of winning teams throughout his tenure, but this deadline feels like a significant missed opportunity. While several contenders aggressively improved, the Yankees failed to solve their biggest problems and watched the Red Sox get better in the process. If catcher or the bullpen ends up costing New York in October, this trade deadline will be remembered as one of Cashman’s biggest failures.
