Switzerland’s World Cup hopes take a massive hit after Breel Embolo is sent off in the quarterfinal against Argentina following a dramatic VAR review.

In the 71st minute, Leandro Paredes is initially shown a yellow card for a challenge on Embolo. However, after reviewing the incident, VAR overturns the decision and instead rules that Embolo simulated the foul. The Swiss striker is shown a yellow card for diving, which is his second booking of the match and results in a red card.

The decision leaves Switzerland down to 10 men and hands Argentina a huge advantage in one of the biggest moments of the tournament. Embolo, one of Switzerland’s most important attacking threats, is forced off as the entire quarterfinal shifts in Argentina’s favor.

Whether the call was correct or not, Argentina has just been handed an enormous gift by VAR, and it could end up deciding who moves on to the World Cup semifinals.
