FIFA’s Argentina Problem: Why Fans Are Losing Trust in the World Cup

The biggest threat to FIFA right now may not be any team remaining in the 2026 World Cup.

It may be the growing perception among fans that Argentina continues to benefit from controversial decisions at the sport’s biggest tournament.

Whether those beliefs are fair or not, the conversation has become impossible to ignore.

Social media has been flooded with criticism following Argentina’s run to the quarterfinals. Many supporters of rival nations believe key moments have repeatedly gone in favor of the defending champions, creating a narrative that FIFA wants Lionel Messi and Argentina to remain in the tournament for as long as possible.

The controversy is not limited to this World Cup. Critics often point back to Qatar 2022, where Argentina received five penalties during its title-winning campaign, the most ever awarded to a single team in a World Cup. Supporters argued the decisions were justified. Detractors viewed them as evidence that crucial calls consistently seemed to favor the Albiceleste.

Those debates have resurfaced in 2026.

Argentina’s dramatic victory over Egypt in the Round of 16 reignited criticism after disputed moments during the match generated outrage among neutral fans online. Earlier in the tournament, critics also pointed to controversial sequences in matches against Cape Verde and other opponents, arguing that important decisions appeared to go Argentina’s way.

The issue for FIFA is not necessarily whether every decision was correct or incorrect.

The issue is perception.

Sports thrive on trust. Fans do not need perfection from referees or VAR officials. They simply need to believe that every team is being treated equally. Once that trust begins to erode, every controversial whistle, every VAR review, and every close call becomes magnified.

Argentina’s path through the tournament has also become part of the debate. While powerhouse nations such as France, Spain, England, and Belgium have been forced into difficult knockout matchups, critics argue that the defending champions have avoided several of the tournament favorites. Supporters counter that every team can only play the opponent in front of them and that Argentina earned its place through results.

Regardless of where one stands, the reaction has been impossible to miss.

Instead of discussions being centered on Messi’s brilliance, Argentina’s tactics, or the quality of play on the field, much of the online conversation has focused on officiating and FIFA itself. That is rarely a positive sign for any sporting competition.

Argentina remains one of the world’s elite teams and does not need conspiracy theories to explain its success. Messi, Lautaro Martínez, Enzo Fernández and the rest of the squad possess enough quality to beat anyone on their day.

But as the tournament enters its final stages, FIFA faces a growing challenge. Every controversial call involving Argentina is now viewed through a lens of suspicion by a significant portion of the football public.

Fair or unfair, that perception has become one of the defining storylines of the 2026 World Cup.
