Portugal Should Consider Bringing Cristiano Ronaldo Off the Bench
There is a real argument to be made that Portugal should bring Cristiano Ronaldo off the bench for the rest of the World Cup. While Ronaldo remains one of the greatest players in football history, Portugal’s attack has often looked stagnant with him leading the line. The team has struggled to consistently create and finish chances, and too much of the attack has revolved around forcing the ball to its legendary captain.
Portugal looked far more dangerous in stretches against Croatia when the attack flowed through players like Rafael Leão and Gonçalo Ramos. Their pace, movement, and willingness to press created space that Portugal has often lacked. A more mobile front line gives opposing defenses far more problems to solve.
Moving Ronaldo to a super-sub role would not diminish his importance. Instead, it could maximize his impact. Bringing him on against tired defenders in the final 30 minutes would allow Portugal to take advantage of his finishing ability, leadership, and experience while giving the team a more dynamic attack from the opening whistle.
With a Round of 16 showdown against Spain looming, Portugal must make difficult decisions if it wants to lift the World Cup trophy. Starting Ronaldo may be the sentimental choice, but bringing him off the bench could be the tactical move that gives Portugal its best chance to keep advancing.
