Carolina Hurricanes Need to End the Alexander Nikishin Saga
The Carolina Hurricanes need to stop wasting time trying to extend restricted free agent defenseman Alexander Nikishin. After reportedly turning down the team’s contract extension offer because his camp is asking for far more money, the Hurricanes should make it clear that enough is enough. If the price is unreasonable, it’s time to trade him and move forward.
Carolina has built its success on smart roster management and avoiding long-term mistakes. Overpaying a player who has yet to establish himself as an NHL regular simply doesn’t fit that philosophy. If Nikishin and his agent are demanding top dollar before proving it on the ice, the Hurricanes should cash in on his trade value while they still can.
Instead, Carolina should shift its full attention to veteran defenseman John Carlson. The Hurricanes already hold the exclusive rights to negotiate with Carlson before free agency, making him the obvious target. Carlson brings elite experience, leadership, championship pedigree, and proven offensive production from the blue line. He is a far better fit for a team that is built to win right now.
The Hurricanes are in championship mode, and Carlson fits that timeline perfectly. Rather than getting caught in a contract standoff with an unproven player, Carolina should make the easy decision, move Nikishin, and do everything possible to bring Carlson to Raleigh.
