Morocco stuns Netherlands after 1-1 draw, wins penalty shootout to reach World Cup Round of 16
MONTERREY, Mexico — Morocco delivered one of the most intriguing surprises of the FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, rallying late before defeating the Netherlands, prevailing 3-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout to advance to the Round of 16 at Estadio BBVA.
The Atlas Lions appeared headed for elimination after the Dutch broke through in the second half, but Morocco refused to fold. A stoppage-time equalizer sent the match to extra time, where neither side could find a winner despite several dangerous chances.
With 120 minutes unable to separate the two nations, the knockout clash came down to penalties.
Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou once again rose to the occasion, making a crucial save during the shootout before Ismael Saibari buried the winning penalty to spark jubilant celebrations among the Moroccan supporters. The Atlas Lions converted three spot kicks while holding the Dutch to two, completing one of the tournament’s most memorable upsets.
The Netherlands struck first in the 72nd minute when Cody Gakpo finished from close range after sustained pressure in the Moroccan penalty area. The goal looked destined to send the Dutch through until Morocco found one final response.
Deep into second-half stoppage time, Chemsdine Talbi delivered a dangerous ball into the box that was headed home by Issa Diop, stunning the Dutch and forcing an additional 30 minutes.
Neither side could break the deadlock in extra time. Morocco continued to press behind its energetic midfield, while the Netherlands generated several dangerous counterattacks, but both defenses held firm as the match headed to penalties.
Statistically, the Atlas Lions were more than worthy of advancing. Morocco controlled much of the possession, created the better scoring opportunities and consistently frustrated one of Europe’s most talented squads with its disciplined defensive shape and relentless work rate.
The victory continues Morocco’s remarkable rise on the international stage following its historic run to the 2022 World Cup semifinals. Now, the Atlas Lions are headed back to the Round of 16 with another signature World Cup victory already added to their growing list of achievements.
For the Netherlands, the loss will sting for years. The Dutch were minutes away from advancing before Morocco’s late equalizer changed everything, turning what looked like a routine knockout victory into one of the biggest heartbreaks of the tournament.
Official result: Morocco 1, Netherlands 1 (Morocco won 3-2 on penalties).
