The NBA’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander MVP Obsession Is Out of Control

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander winning another NBA MVP is exactly why so many fans are frustrated with modern NBA media and voting culture.

Yes, SGA had an incredible season. Yes, the Oklahoma City Thunder dominated the regular season. And yes, he is one of the best scorers in basketball. But back-to-back MVPs? Over Nikola Jokic again? That is where the controversy starts.

The NBA has completely fallen in love with the Thunder’s “perfect basketball” image. Every national show talks about Oklahoma City like they are some unbeatable dynasty already, even though this core has barely existed at the top for two years. Meanwhile, Jokic continues putting up video-game numbers and somehow gets treated like old news because voters are bored of him.

That is the problem with modern MVP voting. Narrative matters more than reality.

SGA averaged 31.1 points, 6.6 assists and 4.3 rebounds on elite efficiency for a 68-win Thunder team. Those are unbelievable numbers. But Jokic was still averaging a near triple-double while carrying far more offensive responsibility every single night. Yet somehow the conversation became “Shai already won.”

And fans are getting tired of the way SGA plays too.

A huge portion of NBA fans see him as the face of foul-baiting basketball. Constant free throws, head snaps, awkward stop-start drives and whistle hunting have made him one of the most polarizing stars in the league. It is effective, but many fans do not think it is entertaining basketball. That criticism has only grown louder during Oklahoma City’s playoff run.

The craziest part is that the NBA almost feels desperate to crown a new American-era face of the league after years of Jokic, Giannis and European dominance. SGA fits perfectly into the NBA marketing machine: flashy scorer, young superstar, elite regular-season team and highlight clips every night.

Meanwhile Jokic just quietly dominates and gets punished for making greatness look normal.

This does not mean SGA is not deserving. He absolutely had an MVP-caliber season. But back-to-back MVPs place players into historic territory with names like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Nikola Jokic. A lot of fans simply do not believe SGA is at that level yet, especially with how much the league seems determined to push him there.

Now the pressure becomes enormous.

Because if SGA is truly a back-to-back MVP, the Thunder are expected to win another championship too. Anything less and the criticism is only going to get louder.
