Conor McGregor’s Return Feels Like UFC Desperation

Conor McGregor is officially back. Again.

And honestly, this feels less like a legendary comeback and more like the UFC desperately trying to recreate a version of itself that no longer exists.

According to ESPN, Dana White announced McGregor will return during International Fight Week at UFC 329 against Max Holloway in Las Vegas. It would be McGregor’s first fight in five years after injuries, cancellations and endless comeback teases.

On paper, this is massive.

McGregor is still the biggest star the UFC has ever had. Even after all the controversies, lawsuits, inactivity and losses, nobody in MMA moves attention like him. The second Dana White announced the fight, the entire combat sports world stopped what it was doing.

But that is also the problem.

The UFC keeps acting like it is still 2016.

Back then, McGregor was untouchable. Double champion. Global superstar. The face of combat sports. But since then? He has fought only four MMA fights in nearly a decade and lost three of them.

Meanwhile Max Holloway has become one of the most respected fighters in the sport.

Holloway is not just some nostalgic opponent either. This is not the young prospect McGregor beat in 2013 anymore. Holloway became a featherweight legend, won the BMF title in one of the craziest knockouts ever against Justin Gaethje and has stayed active while McGregor disappeared for years.

That is why this fight feels dangerous for the UFC.

Because if McGregor loses badly, the illusion is finally over.

The UFC has spent years protecting the idea that Conor could still walk back in and become the face of the sport again. But Father Time is undefeated, and five years away from elite MMA is insane. Especially at 37 years old against someone with Holloway’s pace, cardio and durability.

And fans are split on whether this comeback is even deserved anymore.

Some still see McGregor as the sport’s ultimate showman. Others think the UFC is rewarding inactivity and celebrity over merit. Social media exploded immediately after the announcement because people are tired of the UFC revolving around one guy who has barely fought since the first Trump administration.

Still, there is no denying the stakes.

If McGregor somehow wins, the UFC instantly gets its biggest superstar back heading into a massive 2026 schedule. But if Holloway dominates him? It may officially mark the end of the Conor McGregor era for good.

And honestly, that feels more likely.
