FIFA wanted the 2026 World Cup to feel like the biggest soccer party America has ever hosted. Instead, it is starting to feel like a luxury auction.
According to ESPN and the Associated Press, tickets for the United States’ World Cup opener against Paraguay in Los Angeles are still available, but the top remaining seats are going for $4,105. Many other group-stage tickets are sitting around $2,000, and the cheapest remaining group-stage seats are still around $380.
That is ridiculous.
This is not the final. This is not a semifinal. This is not even a knockout-stage classic. This is a group-stage match. For a family of four, those prices can turn one soccer game into a vacation-level expense before flights, hotels, parking, food, and merchandise are even included.
The worst part is that FIFA knows exactly what it is doing. The 2026 World Cup is using dynamic pricing, meaning prices can rise with demand. FIFA has also added premium ticket categories, pushing some of the best seats into absurd territory.
The World Cup is supposed to belong to the world. It is supposed to be the sport’s biggest celebration, not an event where normal fans get squeezed out while corporate buyers and wealthy tourists take over the best seats.
The United States hosting the World Cup should have been a massive opportunity to grow soccer in this country. Instead, FIFA is risking the exact opposite. When casual American fans see $2,000 or $4,000 tickets for group-stage games, they do not think, “I need to be there.” They think, “This sport is not for me.”
That is the real shame here. The 2026 World Cup should be remembered for packed stadiums, insane atmospheres, and a new generation of American soccer fans falling in love with the game. But if FIFA keeps treating fans like walking wallets, the tournament could become another reminder that the biggest events in sports are becoming less accessible every year.
The World Cup will still make money. The stadiums will still be loud. The TV ratings will still be massive.
But FIFA should not confuse profit with success.
