For years, Gonzaga has been the gold standard of the West Coast Conference. But on Saturday night, Saint Mary’s reminded everyone that the Gaels are no longer chasing the Bulldogs — they’re standing right beside them.
Behind a sensational shooting performance from Mikey Lewis and a dominant second half, Saint Mary’s knocked off No. 9 Gonzaga 70–59 in a statement win that secured the Gaels a share of the WCC regular-season title and sent shockwaves through the conference.
And make no mistake — this wasn’t just a win.
It was a takeover.
Mikey Lewis Takes Over the Rivalry
The story of the night was Mikey Lewis, who delivered one of the greatest performances of his career on the biggest stage.
Lewis poured in 31 points and drilled seven three-pointers, repeatedly torching Gonzaga’s defense from the perimeter. Every time the Bulldogs threatened to regain control, Lewis answered with another dagger.
He finished 10-of-21 from the field and 7-of-13 from deep, showcasing elite shot-making and complete confidence.
His shooting flipped the game.
Saint Mary’s hit 16 three-pointers as a team and shot 48% from beyond the arc — a staggering number against one of the nation’s premier programs.
Second-Half Surge Breaks Gonzaga
The game was tightly contested early, with both teams trading runs and neither able to create much separation.
But everything changed after halftime.
Saint Mary’s defense tightened, Gonzaga’s offense stalled, and Lewis took over.
The Gaels steadily built the lead, eventually pushing it to as many as 17 points. Gonzaga simply had no answer.
Saint Mary’s also controlled key areas of the game:
- Outrebounded Gonzaga 42–37
- Committed just 6 turnovers
- Made 16 three-pointers compared to Gonzaga’s 5
That combination of efficiency and discipline proved decisive.
Gonzaga’s Offense Falls Apart
For Gonzaga, the loss exposed offensive struggles that proved costly.
Graham Ike led the Bulldogs with 17 points, while Adam Miller added 14 and Tyon Grant-Foster chipped in 13. But outside of those performances, Gonzaga couldn’t find consistent scoring.
The Bulldogs shot just 39% from the field and a poor 29% from three-point range.
Even more damaging, Gonzaga’s offense completely stalled in the second half, allowing Saint Mary’s to seize total control.
The Bulldogs never recovered.
Rivalry Power Shift?
This win represents more than just an upset.
It signals that Saint Mary’s is now firmly Gonzaga’s equal — and possibly its biggest threat moving forward.
By securing a share of the WCC title, the Gaels have positioned themselves for a strong NCAA Tournament seed and proved they can beat elite competition when it matters most.
More importantly, they didn’t just beat Gonzaga.
They dominated them when everything was on the line.
Statement Made
For Saint Mary’s, this was about pride, revenge, and respect.
And behind Mikey Lewis’ unforgettable performance, the Gaels delivered all three.
The message was clear:
Saint Mary’s isn’t chasing Gonzaga anymore.
They’ve arrived.
