Brendan Sorsby’s NFL Dream Gets Delayed

Brendan Sorsby’s long and winding football journey has hit another major roadblock.

The NFL announced Wednesday that it will not hold a 2026 Supplemental Draft, effectively ending Sorsby’s hopes of entering the league this year. The former Texas Tech quarterback had applied to be the lone player in the supplemental draft after losing his NCAA eligibility because of gambling violations.

The decision means Sorsby cannot sign with an NFL team in 2026 and must now wait until the 2027 NFL Draft to resume his pursuit of a professional career.

Sorsby had transferred to Texas Tech with expectations of being one of college football’s top quarterbacks in 2026 before his gambling scandal changed everything. Court records showed he acknowledged placing thousands of bets totaling roughly $90,000 while a student-athlete, including wagers involving teams he played for. After entering treatment for gambling addiction and initially fighting the NCAA in court, he dropped his lawsuit and instead petitioned the NFL for entry into a supplemental draft.

The league wasn’t convinced.

In a letter sent to Sorsby and all 32 teams, the NFL said his petition came too late and involved issues too significant to resolve on such a short timeline. The league also emphasized that the case directly touched on the NFL’s “core integrity interests,” making a supplemental draft inappropriate this year.

The ruling is a devastating blow for a quarterback who was once viewed by many evaluators as a potential early-round NFL talent. Instead of competing for a roster spot this summer, Sorsby now faces more than a year away from the NFL while waiting for the 2027 draft process.

His attorney has indicated the decision could be challenged through the NFL Players Association, while other professional leagues such as the UFL or CFL could provide opportunities for Sorsby to stay on the field until he becomes draft-eligible again.

For now, however, one thing is certain: Brendan Sorsby’s NFL dream isn’t over—but it has been put on hold for at least another year.
