At some point, bad luck stops feeling like bad luck.
For the San Francisco 49ers, that point might have arrived.
Over the last 15 years, San Francisco has consistently been one of the NFL’s most talented franchises. The 49ers have reached three Super Bowls since the 2012 season — and lost all three. They fell to the Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII, then blew a fourth-quarter lead against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV before suffering another heartbreaking overtime loss to Kansas City four years later.
Three trips. Three losses.
And somehow, the Super Bowl heartbreak might not even be the strangest part of the alleged 49ers curse.
The Injuries Never Stop
San Francisco’s injury problems have become almost comical.
The 2026 season hasn’t even started, and the 49ers are already dealing with another lengthy injury list. Ricky Pearsall is reportedly out for the season, George Kittle is dealing with an Achilles issue, Christian Kirk has a calf injury and several other players have been sidelined.
Even after San Francisco reportedly dialed back its training-camp workload, the injuries have continued piling up.
Then there’s the substation.
A viral conspiracy theory suggested the electrical substation located next to the 49ers’ practice facility could somehow be connected to their seemingly endless injuries through electromagnetic fields. There’s no scientific evidence supporting that claim. In fact, the 49ers hired an independent scientist, and GM John Lynch said testing found EMF levels dramatically below unsafe levels.
So, no, we probably can’t blame the power station.
But for a supposedly cursed franchise? It’s almost too perfect.
Then Kyle Shanahan Gets Hurt
As if injured players weren’t enough, even the head coach couldn’t escape it.
Kyle Shanahan was seriously injured in a July 14 car accident, suffering a concussion, broken nose, broken hand, broken ribs and facial injuries requiring more than 40 stitches. He has consequently been limited during training camp.
Thankfully, Shanahan is recovering and the other driver wasn’t injured. Shanahan later took responsibility for causing the accident after looking away from the road when his phone fell.
Still, think about how bizarre this sounds.
The 49ers have been crushed by injuries for years. There’s a literal electrical substation next to their facility that became the center of an internet conspiracy theory. They’ve lost three Super Bowls without winning one since the 1994-1995 season.
And now their coach is injured too.
You don’t have to actually believe in curses to admit this franchise has experienced an unbelievable amount of heartbreak.
San Francisco has been too good to be considered a failure. But that’s almost what makes the story worse. The 49ers continually get close enough to make everyone believe this is finally the year — only for another injury, collapse or Patrick Mahomes comeback to destroy everything.
Maybe it’s bad luck. Maybe it’s coincidence.
Or maybe somebody needs to check whether Levi’s Stadium was built on an ancient burial ground.
Because at this point, the San Francisco 49ers might actually be cursed.
